In 1844, twenty-eight working-class men in Rochdale opened a small shop on Toad Lane. They sold honest goods at fair prices, paid a dividend back to the people who shopped there, and wrote down seven principles for how a member-owned enterprise should run. Those principles became the modern cooperative movement. The Rochdale Pioneers were the beginning.

THE ROCHDALE PIONEERS

The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers was small and grim and made of weavers and skilled tradesmen who had been crushed by industrial wage cuts. They pooled a pound a person. They opened on December 21st with a thin inventory of flour, butter, sugar, oatmeal, and candles. They lived by seven principles: open membership, democratic control, member economic participation, autonomy, education, cooperation among cooperatives, and concern for community.

Co-operatives UK is the modern federation of British cooperatives. The Co-operative Group (food, banking, funeral services) is one of the largest member-owned businesses in the country. Worker co-ops, housing co-ops, agricultural co-ops, energy co-ops, and tech co-ops are all alive and growing across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

What we are doing now (worker-owned, surplus to the people who made the work, no shareholders) is just the same seven principles applied to 2026 tools.

WHAT THE WORK COULD LOOK LIKE HERE

The UK has its own version of the work the CCC Boys are doing in South Carolina. Flood prep and resilience across the Midlands, the Severn corridor, and the East Anglian coast. Apprenticeship pipelines in the traditional trades that the country is starting to lose. Urban regeneration in post-industrial towns that need real work, not consultancies. Reforestation across the moors and the uplands.

And the software work that doesn't care where you live. Kits, small tools, things that earn their keep. AI as the partner, not the replacement.

Friends of the corps in the UK know the cooperative tradition better than we do. The framework, the technology, the apprenticeship curriculum, and the playbook are open source under Creative Commons. You take what fits.

We're just trying to apply them in 2026.

THE CORPS IN 2026

A LOCAL CORPS, A NATIONAL MOVEMENT.

The CCC Boys corps is based in Colleton County, South Carolina. Three cousins, Justin, Jeremy, and Joey. The framework, the technology, the apprenticeship curriculum, and the playbook are all open source. As builders in their own communities raise their hands, branches form.

South Carolina is the first chapter. The UK could be next. No fees. No buy-in. You are a friend of the corps, not a franchisee. The handshake stays the handshake.
